Windsor, Ontario – The Saginaw Spirit dropped a 7-1 decision to the West Division rival Windsor Spitfires Sunday evening to start a three-game road swing. The Spirit has allowed seven goals in both games against the Spitfires this season.
The Saginaw Spirit had the opportunity to take the lead early in the first period if not for Windsor goaltender Michael DiPietro. After receiving a pass from Overager Reagan O’Grady, New York Islanders prospect Blade Jenkins had the puck at the top of the crease with an open net. Vancouver Canucks prospect DiPietro made a desperation splits save to keep the puck out and the game scoreless.
Dallas Stars prospect Curtis Douglas put the Windsor Spitfires on the board 9:09 into the first period with his seventh goal of the season. Douglas brought the puck down the left side of the ice on a two-on-one rush and took a shot from the left faceoff circle that beat Saginaw goaltender Cameron Lamour between the legs.
Just over two minutes later, Douglas added his second goal of the game. Douglas took a shot from the top of the circle that hit the skate of Saginaw defenseman Bode Wilde, Douglas found the rebound and took a wrist shot that found the back of the net.
Arizona Coyotes prospect Ivan Prosvetov replaced goaltender Cameron Lamour in net for the Spirit after the second Spitfires goal. Prosvetov came into the game playing strong, allowing just four goals in the last two games with a .939 save percentage.
Curtis Douglas would complete the natural hat trick just 2:16 later on the power play. Douglas took the puck away from a Saginaw defender in the slot and turned around to take a wrist shot that beat Prosvetov to give Windsor a 3-0 lead going into the first intermission.
After a Spirit giveaway at center ice, Windsor’s Tyler Angle came in to the Spirit end on a breakaway. Angle’s shot hit both posts before hitting Prosvetov and rolling into the Saginaw net.
Daniel D’Amico added the Spitfires fifth goal of the game. D’Amico received a pass from Connor Corcoran on a three-on-two rush and took a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot beating the goaltender.
D’Amico tallied his second goal of the game less than two minutes later. Louka Henault slid a pass over to the Spirit slot that D’Amico one-timed into the Saginaw goal.
Minnesota Wild prospect Damien Giroux put the Spirit on the board 16 seconds later with his eighth goal of the season. After Saginaw 2017 first round pick Nicholas Porco took a shot from the bottom of the right circle off DiPietro’s right pad, Giroux sent the rebound into the back of the Windsor net. Saginaw trailed after two periods of play, 6-1.
Saginaw had opportunities to cut the Windsor lead early in the third period but DiPietro made several big saves to keep the puck out. After Detroit Red Wings prospect Brady Gilmour sent a pass to the slot who Jackson, Michigan native Blade Jenkins one-timed towards the empty net. Dipietro made the save sliding over to make the desperation save.
Windsor added their seventh of the game on the power play with 7:56 remaining in the game. Las Vegas Golden Knights prospect Connor Corcoran took a shot from the point that Cole Purboo redirected past Prosvetov to make that game, 7-1.
Michael DiPietro allowed just one goal on 32 Spirit shots and improved to 13-3-0-1 all-time against Saginaw.
