Spirit’s Kea Signs NHL Contract, Kontos Moves on to the Professional Ranks

04/01/14 Spirit’s Kea Signs NHL Contract, Kontos Moves on to the Professional Ranks

The National Hockey League’s Buffalo Sabres have announced that the team has signed Saginaw Spirit forward Justin Kea to a three year, entry level contract. Kea now becomes the second Spirit roster player to agree on terms with an NHL team joining goaltender Jake Paterson, now under contract with the Detroit Red Wings. Kea will now report to the Sabres AHL affiliate in Rochester, N.Y.

A former first round OHL pick for the Spirit, Kea just completed his fourth season in Saginaw recording 22 goals and 27 assists for 49 points in 58 games. Kea ranks 16th in all time Spirit points with 51 goals and 66 assists in 253 games played. He was also named a finalist as Best Defensive Forward in this year’s OHL Western Conference Coaches Poll.

Meantime, forward Kristoff Kontos will embark on his professional career after completing his overage season in Saginaw. The Spirit’s top point producer from the 2013-14 campaign will now join the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye, which has a joint affiliation with the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks. Kontos posted 25 goals along with 50 assists in his final season in the OHL, while equaling the league’s all-time record for regular season games played in a career.
