On September 6th, 2012, the Saginaw Spirit took on the Sarnia Sting. While some people may be disappointed that fall and winter are right around the corner, the Spirit definitely did not disappoint their fans in their first home exhibition game of the season.
The game started out very fast moving, lots of passing and ice time for both teams, but the Spirit were able to take the lead early, with the first goal from Nick Moutrey, assisted by Carlos Amestoy and Frank Schumacher. The next goal achieved by the Spirit was on a power play scored by Eric Locke with assists from Justin Kea and Sam Povorozniouk. With three minutes left in the first period, the Sting recieved their first goal from Reid Boucher assisted by Craig Hottot. Both penalties that were given out in the first period went to two Sting players Nathan Mater for interference and Alexandre Renaud for tripping both recieving two minutes in the penalty box.
The second period proved to be a little more challenging for the Spirit as the Sting outplayed Spirit defense. Two goals were scored within seconds of each other both by the Sting, the first goal scored by Joshua Chapman assisted by Reid Boucher, and the second goal scored by Davis Brown with assists from Anthony DeAngelo and Nickolas Latta. As the second period progessed, two more goals for each team were scored. The Sting’s two goals happened first, from Jordan Addesi that went unassisted, the next goal from Davis Brown also going unassisted. With just under ten minutes left in the second period, the Sting changed their goaltender to Knicholas Dawe. Saginaw’s two goals would then come with less than five minutes left in the period, first from Frank Schumacher and the next Spirit goal was scored less than three minutes left in the period by Sam Povorozniouk assisted by Eric Locke and Steven Strong. The score at the end of the second period was Sarnia 5 – Saginaw 4.
