Preview: Spirit, Spitfires open home-and-home series Friday in Windsor

Windsor, ON – The Saginaw Spirit (8-7-1-0) look to return to the win column Friday night when they travel to Windsor for the first time this season to face the Spitfires (8-7-0-2). Puck drop at the WFCU Centre is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Spirit took a 5-3 defeat Wednesday night at the hands of the Flint Firebirds, who beat the Spirit in their building in regulation for the first time since November 23, 2016. Ironically enough, that was also a 5-3 final score. Saginaw, playing with just 15 skaters, received goals from Imports Matyas Sapovaliv and Pavel Mintyukov. Sapovaliv scored a power play goal and a shorthanded goal, while Mintyukov’s came at even strength. Sapovaliv’s power play marker was his team-leading third goal of the season while on the man-advantage, while his shorthanded goal was Saginaw’s league-leading, seventh of the season.

The Spits last took to the ice on Wednesday as well, falling to the London Knights 5-2 at the WFCU Centre. Windsor and London were knotted in a 2-2 affair, before former Spitfire Cody Morgan put the Knights on top. An insurance goal from Liam Gilmartin and an empty net goal by Gerard Keane gave the Knights the victory.

During the 2019-20 season, the Spirit won three of their six meetings with the Spitfires, including a thrilling late-game comeback on November 10, 2019. The Spirit scored three goals from Blade Jenkins, Jake Goldowski, and Damien Giroux in the final 1:40 of the game to force overtime, and overage defenseman Reilly Webb scored to complete the comeback and give Saginaw an improbable 7-6 overtime triumph.

Fans can catch the TV broadcast of tonight’s game live at Buffalo Wild Wings of Saginaw located at 2690 Tittabawassee Road. Buffalo Wild Wings is the official road game watch party host of the Saginaw Spirit. This and every game this season will also be broadcast live on the home for Spirit Hockey on the radio, 100.5 WSGW-FM and wsgw.com with the voices of Spirit Hockey, Joey Battaino and Dennis Desrosiers.
