Kitchener, ON – The Saginaw Spirit (7-5-1-0) return to action Friday night, looking to build on an impressive 4-1 victory Wednesday night over the West Division-leading Soo Greyhounds, with a road engagement with the Kitchener Rangers (8-7-0-0) at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium in Kitchener, Ontario at 7:30 p.m.
Led by a 30-save performance by Sterling Heights, Michigan native Andrew Oke, the Spirit returned to the win column Wednesday night and snapped a three-game skid at The Dow Event Center in the process. The Spirit received goals from Dean Loukus, Josh Bloom, Roberto Mancini, and Calem Mangone, while holding the top power play in the OHL to 0-for-4 on the man advantage.
Tonight’s opponent, the Kitchener Rangers, last played Sunday evening in Saginaw, and extended their winning streak to three-straight with a 2-1 decision over the Spirit. Import goaltender Pavel Cajan stopped 29 Spirit shots and was the game’s first star, while overage defenseman Arber Xhekaj scored a goal and an assist for the Rangers. Cajan is currently ranked fourth in the OHL in save percentage, stopping 91.1% of shots faced.
The Rangers are led offensively by overage winger Mike Petizian (9-7-16pts) and Los Angeles Kings prospect Francesco Pinelli (5-11-16pts). Saginaw’s Josh Bloom is the team leader in scoring with eight goals and six assists this season.
As the Spirit prepare for tonight’s road test, they are the second-best team away from home this season in the Ontario Hockey League with a 4-1-1-0 record. Only the Barrie Colts have a higher road winning percentage at 71.4%.
