A Back and Forth Affair Leads to Late Game Heroics as Saginaw Tops Sarnia

The Saginaw Spirit welcomed the Sarnia Sting to The Dow Events Center on Wednesday, October 2nd.  A physical sixty minutes of hockey led to a 4-3 victory for Saginaw over Sarnia.

Saginaw’s Andrey Alexeev got the game started by scoring an unassisted goal, his first of the season, four minutes into the period. Three minutes later the Spirit found the back of the net off the stick of Jimmy Lodge to make it 2-0 early in the period.   Picking up assists on Lodge’s first goal of the season were Zach Bratina and Jake Paterson, who recorded his first offensive point of the season. At the 6:34 mark of the first period, Sarnia was awarded a penalty shot and Jordan Addesi capitalized to draw the Sting within one of the Spirit, 2-1.

Five minutes into the second period, Sarnia’s Nick Latta tied the contest at two with a goal assisted by Craig Duininck. The score remained tied courtesy of a defensive battle for the majority of the period until Saginaw’s Nick Moutrey, with assists from Cody Payne and Andrey Alexeev, sent a wicked wrister past Sarnia goaltender Brodie Barrick at 4:37 of the second period, putting the Spirit on top 3-2. With less than a minute remaining, Sting defenseman Anthony DeAngelo scored a powerplay goal assisted by Nick Latta and Nikolay Goldobin to even the score once again.

A defensive struggle through the third period eventually gave way for Spirit forward Andrey Alexeev to score his second goal of the night, assisted by Nick Moutrey and Jacob Ringuette, with only 29 seconds remaining in the game. Saginaw was able to hold on to the 4-3 lead with help from Jake Paterson, who stifled Sarnia in the third period pitching a shutout and recording 29 saves for the game.
