Spirit score twice on the power play in a 6-2 loss to Barrie

Saginaw, Mich. – On Saturday night, the Spirit took on the Barrie Colts at The Dow Event Center. Today’s game is Saginaw’s first game in seven days as the Colts finish up their third game in three nights. Powered by two goals from Andrei Svechnikov and four assists from Lucas Chiodo, the Spirit dropped their second straight at home by a final of 6-2.

The Colts Andrei Svechnikov got the Colts on the board 53 seconds into the game by faking out Cameron Lamour, and sliding the puck into the yawning. Barrie kept the Spirit on their toes in a fight to control the puck. Svechnikov would add another goal at 11:08. Late in the first, Curtis Douglas of Barrie was whistled for a penalty, giving Saginaw a 5-on-4 advantage in. Marcus Crawford netted a goal at 19:28 breaking an 0-for-25 streak on the power play to start the season. The goal for Crawford was his 100th OHL point, all with the Saginaw Spirit. Barrie outshot the Spirit 18-4 in the first, and led 2-1 after one period of play.

Just after the Spirit had killed one of their six penalties against them, Kirill Nizhnikov gave the Colts their first two-goal lead of the game. The Spirit controlled the puck during a power play in which Blade Jenkins defected the puck over Propp’s left shoulder, but was ruled no goal due to a high stick. The Spirit kept fighting and was able to secure another goal on the board when Matthew Kreis scored his 1st goal of the season. Barrier’s zone saw a lot of action with Saginaw tying Barrier for shots on goal at 21-21. The second period ended with 3-2 on the scoreboard in favor of Barrie.

During the third period, Barrie netted back-to-back goals courtesy of Curtis Douglas and Zachary Magwood at 5:22 and 6:13, respectively. A Spirit penalty on Duncan Penman allowed Barrie to nab a power-play goal at 13:44 by Alexey Lipanov giving the Colts a 6-2 lead. The Colts held on for their second win of the season in enemy territory, while the Spirit dropped their second straight game at home.
