SAGINAW, MI. –  On Sunday night, Saginaw continued their three-game weekend playing host to the Erie Otters. Saginaw hosted the Nexteer Robotics Night where 15 area schools and their robotics teams were invited to The Dow Event Center. Robots graced the ice for the ceremonial puck drop and t-shirt toss. Both teams played games the night before and were victorious against their opponents. Saginaw was able to outshoot Erie 40-34, leading to a 3-1 victory. The win gave the Spirit five consecutive wins at The Dow Event Center, and six wins in the month of November.

Saginaw saw a goal scoring opportunity early in the first when Mason Kohn set up Keaton Middleton, but was saved by the blocker of Erie goaltender Troy Timpano. Shortly after, Cole Coskey headed to the opposing net alone cutting across the ice and sinking the Spirit’s first goal of the game at 5:03 in the first. Erie winger Patrick Fellows was able to backhand a pass from Alex Gritz to tie the game 1-1. Both teams kept the play in the period flowing, as there only four whistles throughout the entire first. Saginaw outshot the Otters 15-13 in the first period.

Saginaw started the second period on a penalty kill for 30 seconds of regular time. An Erie hooking call on Erie winger, Cade Robinson left the Spirit with a one-man advantage. Kohn and Coskey batted the puck back-and-forth until Kohn was able to secure the powerplay goal. Brock Hill aimed from the point where Blade Jenkins was able to successfully tip in the puck past Timpano. The Spirit ended the second period on a penalty kill and would play shorthanded for the first thirty seconds of the final period. Saginaw took a two-goal lead into the locker room after forty minutes of play.

Both teams played defensively strong in the third period holding the score 3-1. Both teams’ goalies saw their fair share of action in their zones with the final shots on goal being 40-34 in favor of Saginaw. Saginaw picked up two points with a 5-2 win over Erie.
