Saginaw, MI – Saginaw Spirit General Manager Dave Drinkill announced Saturday the acquisition of Owen Tippett via trade with the Mississauga Steelheads.

In exchange, the Saginaw Spirit return center Aidan Prueter, a 2020 second-round pick (BAR), a 2021 second-round pick (SBY), a 2019 third-round pick (SAG), a 2020 third-round pick (SAR), a 2019 seventh-round pick (SAG), and a 2020 seventh-round pick (SAG).

“It has been an exciting 48 hours for the Saginaw Spirit organization and we are very pleased to be adding Owen Tippett to our team,” said the team’s General Manager. “Owen is one of the best pure goal scorers not only in the OHL, but in all of junior hockey, and we feel we added a top-end, elite talent that can help produce a lot of goals down the stretch and into the playoffs.”

“Tippett has a lethal shot with a quick release, and has the unique ability to score from anywhere in the offensive end. Adding Owen Tippett and Ryan McLeod this week has added two elite, offensive game-breakers to our already strong and deep group of forwards.”

Tippett, 19, comes to Saginaw after spending the last four seasons (2015-19) with the Mississauga Steelheads where he appeared in 182 games. Drafted No. 4 overall in the 2015 OHL Prioirty Selection Draft, Tippett has recorded 114 goals and 89 assists for 203 points.

The Peterborough, Ontario native was selected by the Florida Panthers in the first round, 10th overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft and signed his entry-level contract in July of 2017. Tippett began the 2017-18 season with the Panthers and scored his first NHL goal Oct. 27, 2017 against the Anaheim Ducks.

Tippett most recently competed for Team Canada at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada. Tippett tallied four points in five games in the tournament.

In 2017-18, Tippett recorded a career high in assists (39) and tied his career high in points (75), while scoring 36 goals in 51 games.

The 6-foot-2, 204-pound Tippett played his minor hockey with the Toronto Red Wings, scoring 52 goals and 35 assists in 50 games during the 2014-15 season to lead the GTHL in scoring. Just six points behind Tippett, was teammate and newly acquired Ryan McLeod, who scored 81 points that season for the Toronto Marlboros.

Tippett is the cousin of former Saginaw Spirit first round pick Mitchell Stephens.

Prueter, 17, is in his second season with the Spirit appearing in 99 games with the club.  The London, Ontario native scored nine goals and 21 assists for 30 points in his Spirit career. The Spirit selected Prueter in the second round, 24th overall, in the 2017 Under-17 OHL Priority Selection Draft.

“Mississauga is getting a very good, young player in Aidan Prueter,” said Drinkill. “We know he will be successful with the Steelheads. As exciting as it is to add a player like Owen Tippett, it is equally as tough to move a player like Aidan Prueter.  We wish him and his family all the best moving forward.”

Owen Tippett is expected to be in the lineup Saturday night when the Spirit host the Kitchener Rangers at The Dow Event Center and will wear No. 47. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
