Erie, PA. – On Saturday night, Saginaw continued their weekend road trip to face the Erie Otters. Both teams played away games the night before and fell short to their opponents. Saginaw was able to outshoot Erie 31-14 leading to a 5-2 victory.
Saginaw gain controlled of the puck early in the first and kept Erie goaltender Anand Oberoi on his toes. Saginaw defenseman Hayden Davis scored the first goal of the game with a cross ice pass from Cole Coskey. The Spirit set the pace of the game when they took control of the puck during their first penalty kill with a shorthanded opportunity denied by Oberoi. After a successful Spirit penalty kill Erie right winger Cade Robinson was able to sneak one past Evan Cormier on a break down the left wing side. The period ended tied 1-1 with the Spirit registering 13 shots on goal, while Erie got five.
Saginaw started off the second period controlling the puck and the play, once again. Ben Badalamenti gave the Spirit a 2-1 lead after batting the puck from midair right past Oberoi. Hayden Davis would see his second goal of the night after a shot from the point was deflected off of an Erie defenseman. During an Erie power play D.J. Busdeker took off on a breakaway and received a penalty shot after being slashed. Busdeker went left bar down and scored the Spirit’s first penalty shot opportunity of the season. After 40 minutes of play Saginaw held a 4-1 lead over Erie.
The Spirit were able to capitalize for a 5-1 lead after an exceptional pass from Keaton Middleton to Busdeker who was able to slide the puck past the glove of Oberoi. Tension rose in the Erie Insurance Arena during the third period. Roughing lead to penalties to both teams and a misconduct for Erie defenseman Kurtis Henry after a fight with Saginaw’s Marcus Crawford. Because Crawford was instigated into the fight, it will not go against his allotted three fights for the season. After review, a powerplay goal from Taylor Raddysh made the final count for Erie two goals. The Spirit registered 31 shots on goal while the Otters only saw 14. Saginaw picked up two points with a 5-2 win over Erie.
