The Saginaw Spirit in their eleventh season home opener in the OHL provided their fans exactly what they were looking for in a 5 – 0 victory against Sudbury Wolves.
After the Wolves gave out with a strong opening period, the Spirit found themselves up 1 – 0 on a goal by Captain Vince Trocheck. The Florida Panther’s prospect was assisted by Grant Webermin and Jake Ringuette. The story of the first period was the stellar play of Jake Paterson as the Red Wings prospect make twelve saves to preserve the 1 – 0 advantage.
In the second, the Spirit added to the advantage with the first OHL goal by Andrey Alexeev on a hard shot in the slot that beat Sudbury goaltender Joel Vienneau. Assists on Andrey Alexeev’s goal went to Garret Ross and Frank Schumacher. After two the Spirit led 2 -0 and would add to the lead aided by the power play in the third.
The Spirit would strike for three more goals in the third period all on a power play to put the game away. Eric Locke opened the scoring in the third with the first of his two goals in the game with an assist going to Vince Trocheck. Justin Kea scored his first goal of the season again on the power play converting a wrist shot in front of the net; assist on Justin Kea’s goal went to Dalton Young and Carlos Amestoy. Spirit capped off the scoring with their third power play goal as Eric Locke scored his second goal of the game with assists from Andrey Alexeev and Grant Webermin.
The story of the game was of goaltender Jake Paterson who made thirty saves in the game many of the spectacular variety, earning his first shutout of the season. The final score of the game was Saginaw 5 – Sudbury 0.
