SPIRIT LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT; LOSE 3-2 TO STEELHEADS

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. On Sunday afternoon, the Saginaw Spirit and the Mississauga Steelheads completed their season series from the Hershey Centre. The Steelheads defeated the Spirit on October 15, 3-2 in overtime, at The Dow Event Center. Oddly enough, the same score was had today, as the Spirit fell on the road, 3-2.

The Steelheads got on the board first in the opening period at 15:16. Owen Tippett gathered the puck at the left circle, and made a quick pass to Los Angeles Kings prospect Spencer Watson. Watson was near the net when he found New Jersey Devils first round pick Michael McLeod in front of the net for the easy tap in. Despite the goal, the Spirit led in shots on goal 13-12.

The scoring picked up in the following period. Three goals were tallied, but two of them went in Mississauga’s favor. At 11:57, Trent Fox scored his 10th goal of the year to give the Steelheads a 2-0 lead. Michael McLeod brought the puck into the zone and made a pass to Spencer Watson in the right circle. Watson then tapped the puck to Fox who was streaking towards the net for the goal.

Three minutes later, Brady Gilmour added his 22nd goal of the season to bring the Spirit to within one score. Keaton Middleton took a shot from the left board which couldn’t be tracked down near the net. After a few swaps at the puck it slipped to the front of the net when Gilmour sent it flying towards the top of the net.

At 18:11, Matthew Titus scored his first career OHL goal to give the Steelheads a 3-1 lead. A turnover in the neutral zone led to a 3-on-2 charge. Aidan McFarland began the charge as he skated up the left board. When he reached the left circle, he made a hard pass to Titus in the slot for the open net. Saginaw again led the shots on goal, 11-9.

The final period produced a single goal by the Spirit at 8:15. It was tallied by Kris Bennett for his 18th goal of the year and 50th career OHL goal. Hayden Hodgson forced a turnover in the Mississauga zone, and skated towards the back of the net. Once he reached the rhombus, he made a slick behind-the-back pass to a streaking Bennett who tapped it over Matthew Mancina’s right shoulder. A late charge by the Spirit in the waning minutes proved unsuccessful as the Steelheads escaped with a 3-2 decision. Saginaw led the final shots on goal, 39-31.
