Preview: Surging Spirit welcome Sting to The Dow Saturday evening
SAGINAW, Mich. – On Saturday night, the Saginaw Spirit (21-12-3-0, 45 points, T-3rd in West Division) welcome the Sarnia Sting (26-13-2-0, 54 points, 2nd in West Division) to The Dow Event Center. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
With a divisional tilt on the docket tonight, this matchup marks the second game in as many days for the Spirit. On Friday night, Saginaw erased a two-goal deficit to the Erie Otters (12-20-6-1) during the third period with a pair of Brady Gilmour (Detroit Red Wings) goals, and Max Grondin chipped in with his 5th tally of the season to give the Spirit a 3-2 lead. The Otters later registered a game-tying goal with 1:07 remaining in the third period to force overtime. During the extra frame, Marcus Crawford gained the offensive zone for the Spirit before firing the game-winning goal into the Otters net with 3:29 expired in the overtime period, securing a 4-3 victory for Saginaw.
As for Sarnia, the Sting were also active last night during a road bout with the Flint Firebirds. While Flint recorded more shots in the contest (40 to 37), the Sting outpaced the Firebirds in a 7-1 Sarnia victory. In the offensive clinic, Sting forwards Sean Josling and Franco Sproviero both potted two goals apiece and earned 1st and 2nd star honors on the night respectively. Sting goaltender Justin Fazio posted 39 saves in the divisional contest as well.
With last night’s victory in hand, Sarnia ended a five-game losing streak, which its longest winless stretch so far this season. Saginaw, on the other hand, is currently riding a four-game winning streak.
Tonight marks the fourth game between the Spirit and Sting during the 2017-18 regular season with the last matchup coming this past Wednesday, January 3rd. The Spirit have come out victorious in each of the three prior games this season and sport a favorable 13-9 goal differential in those contests.
As for last season, Saginaw posted a 3-2-0-1 mark against Sarnia and currently maintains a 7-2-0-1 in their last 10 games against the Sting held at The Dow Event Center.
For the Spirit, Marcus Crawford leads the way with 36 points and is in the midst of a four-game point streak with two goals and six assists in that stretch. Jordan Kyrou (St. Louis Blues) tops the Sting with 58 points on the season but has been unavailable recently due to the World Juniors. If he is not active for tonight’s game, Drake Rymsha (Los Angeles Kings) will be leaned on heavily. The Huntington Woods, Michigan native has four goals in three games this season against the Spirit.
