SAGINAW, Mich. – On Sunday evening, the Saginaw Spirit (13-10-3-0, 29 points, 4th in West Division) host the Niagara IceDogs (13-8-3-2, 31 points, 2nd in Central Division) at The Dow Event Center for the first of two meetings between Saginaw and Niagara. The puck drops at 5:30 p.m. for the annual Teddy Bear Toss Game presented by Jayden Lamb Memorial Foundation. Fans are encouraged tobring a new stuffed animal and when the Spirit score their first goal, toss it onto the ice! All toys thrown onto the ice will be collected and donated to charity. Following the game there will also be a post-game skate with the players.
Saturday night, the Saginaw Spirit hosted the CHL’s No. 1 ranked Sarnia Sting. The first period would end in a 4-0 lead for Sarnia. Three goals from center Drake Rymsha would supply half of the goals scored by the Sting that night. Sarnia saw two more goals in the second period making the score 6-0 before D.J. Busdeker and Duncan Penman landed two goals for the Spirit. The Spirit saw a comeback with a four-goal period in the third. Blade Jenkins, Ryan Stepien, Brady Gilmour, and Damien Giroux all added goals in the final regulation frame, sending the game to overtime. In the extra period, Cole Coskey scored the game-winner on a breakaway to secure a Spirit victory, 7-6.
The Niagara IceDogs were in Flint on Saturday night to take on the Firebirds for the first of two meetings this season. The IceDogs entered the game riding a three-game win streak. The first Niagara goal was scored two minutes into the game by Danial Singer. Not long after the Firebirds scored, tying the game 1-1 at the end of the first period. The ‘Dogs would then see four goals in the second period taking a 4-1 lead. Danial Singer and Bradey Johnson both netted two goals in the game. Flint fought back in the last period of play scoring three goals, two form Nicolas Mattienen. The game ended in a 6-4 victory in favor of Niagara.
Tonight marks the 31st regular season meeting between the Saginaw Spirit and the Mississauga/Niagara IceDogs. The Spirit enter tonight’s match-up with a 13-15-1-1 overall record against the IceDogs. Saginaw has a home record of 10-5-0-0 at The Dow Event Center and 3-10-1-1 on the road.
The Spirit will start their back-to-back road trip weekends on Saturday Dec. 9 in Hamilton followed by Oshawa on Sunday Dec. 10. Saginaw will then play in Sarnia Dec. 13 and Flint Dec. 15 before returning home to host Windsor on Dec. 16 at 7:05 p.m. for their last game before their holiday break.
